NFL fans cite frustration with fragmented streaming services and rising costs
Football fans in Nashville and New York City expressed frustration to OutKick reporter Davey Hudson over the increasing difficulty and cost of accessing NFL games amid the league's expanding streaming partnerships.[1]
Several fans described the need to subscribe to multiple services to watch games. One said it is frustrating to track which app carries each game and to pay for several subscriptions. Another called the system "stupid," noting the requirement for at least five platforms plus additional fees.
A New York Jets season ticket holder with NFL Sunday Ticket said he still lacks access to some games despite multiple services. Other fans reported paying for three to six streaming subscriptions.
The NFL distributes games across traditional broadcasters and streaming platforms. Amazon Prime Video holds rights to Thursday Night Football through the 2033 season.[2] Netflix will stream two Christmas Day games in 2024, marking its entry into U.S. NFL broadcasts.[3] Peacock, NBCUniversal's service, exclusively streamed a wild-card playoff game in January 2024 and will do so again in 2025.[4] YouTube TV offers NFL Sunday Ticket, providing out-of-market Sunday afternoon games, at an additional cost atop its base subscription.[5]
Fans estimated the combined annual cost of necessary services, including YouTube TV with Sunday Ticket, Amazon Prime, Peacock and Netflix, exceeds $1,500, excluding cable or internet fees. One fan described it as a "money grab."
FCC Chairman Brendan Carr has voiced concerns about rising streaming prices for sports content.[6]
