Tiger Woods arrested for DUI in Florida in 2017, seriously injured in California car crash in 2021
Tiger Woods, American professional golfer and five-time Masters champion, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence on May 29, 2017, in Jupiter, Florida.[1]
Palm Beach County sheriff's deputies found Woods asleep in a running Mercedes-Benz at about 3:00 a.m. stopped across a median on a road in Jupiter. He performed poorly on field sobriety tests and was booked into jail.[1]
Blood tests later revealed hydrocodone and other prescription medications along with THC in Woods' system. He explained the arrest as an unexpected reaction to a mix of prescription drugs.[1]
Woods initially pleaded not guilty but in October 2017 pleaded guilty to reckless driving as part of a plea deal.[1]
On February 23, 2021, Woods was involved in a single-vehicle crash in Rancho Palos Verdes near Los Angeles, California.[2]
Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department reported the incident occurred around 7:15 a.m. Woods' Hyundai Genesis SUV was traveling at 84-87 mph (135-140 kph) in a 45 mph zone when it lost control, struck the center median, became airborne for about 100 feet (30 meters), rotated, and hit trees.[2]
The vehicle sustained major damage. Woods was extricated by firefighters and taken to hospital with serious injuries to his right lower leg, including compound fractures and dislocations, requiring emergency surgery and subsequent operations.[2]
Woods has undergone multiple back surgeries in prior years and referenced prescription medications during interactions with law enforcement.[1][2]
