Shopian Police Arrest Three Men in Gambling Raid Near Orchards
Police in Shopian district detained three individuals caught gambling during a routine patrol near Sugan Orchards under Police Post Turkwangam jurisdiction. The action underscores ongoing efforts to curb illegal activities that disrupt public order in rural Kashmir. Authorities recovered ₹29,000 in stake money and playing cards from the site.
Identities and Escape of Suspect
The arrested men are Bashir Ahmad Ganie, son of Gh Mohammad Ganie from Pulwama; Nisar Ahmad Seh, son of Gh Mohammad Seh from Achan Pulwama; and Hilal Ahmad Ahanger, son of Gh Qadir Ahanger from Malikpora Pulwama. A fourth person, Bilal Ahmad Sheikh from Tresal Pulwama, fled the scene before police could apprehend him. Such incidents highlight the challenges of enforcing laws in orchard-heavy areas where remote spots facilitate discreet gatherings.
Legal Proceedings Underway
Officers registered FIR No. 49/2026 at Police Station Zainapora under Section 13 of the Gambling Act, which prohibits gaming in public places and enforces penalties for such offenses. Investigation proceeds to uncover potential networks or repeat involvement. This section of the Act targets activities that often serve as gateways to broader criminality, including debt-related disputes and organized vice.
Campaign Against Social Evils
Shopian Police frame these operations within a sustained drive against social ills that erode community stability, particularly in agricultural belts prone to unregulated assemblies. Gambling fosters addiction and financial ruin, straining family structures and local economies dependent on fruit cultivation. The force calls for resident vigilance, emphasizing that public tips strengthen enforcement and prevent escalation to more severe crimes like smuggling or narcotics trade.
