Pro Football Hall of Famer Darrell Green attends U.S. flag football national team trials

Darrell Green, a former Washington cornerback who played his entire 20-year NFL career with the franchise from 1983 to 2002, is taking part in trials for the U.S. men's flag football national team this week in Chula Vista, California.[1][2]

Green, 64, qualified for the in-person trials through USA Football's digital combine, where his results impressed staff despite his age relative to other participants. "Our coaches and staff felt he deserved a closer look. ... He’s a rare athlete who has stayed in shape and is ready to compete this week," said Callie Brownson, USA Football’s senior director of high performance and national teams.[3]

Selected 28th overall in the 1983 NFL draft out of Texas A&M-Kingsville, Green tallied 54 career interceptions, six of which he returned for touchdowns. He was a two-time Super Bowl champion with Washington (XXII in 1988 and XXVI in 1992), a seven-time Pro Bowl selection and a first-team All-Pro in 1986. Green was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2008.[1][2]

Green is aiming for an invitation to national team training camp next month and a potential roster spot on the 2026 U.S. squad for the IFAF Flag World Championships in Germany. The U.S. men's team has won six of the seven world championships held since 2010.[3][4]

About 100 men and women athletes are competing in the trials, including former WNBA player Loryn Goodwin and ex-Florida State basketball guard O’Mariah Gordon. Flag football is set to debut as an Olympic sport at the 2028 Los Angeles Games.[3][5]

"I’m going to give it my best and I’ll walk away with my head up, either way," Green said.[3]
