Non-binary runner Nikki Hiltz competes in women's events at Paris Olympics amid eligibility debates
American middle-distance runner Nikki Hiltz, who identifies as non-binary and uses they/them pronouns, competed in the women's 1,500 metres at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.[1][2]
Hiltz advanced from the heats but finished 10th in the semi-finals on August 10, 2024, at Stade de France in Paris.[3][4]
Born on May 5, 1996, in San Francisco, California, Hiltz races for the New Balance team and holds the American indoor mile record of 4:18.89, set at the Millrose Games on February 4, 2023.[1][5]
Hiltz won gold in the women's 1,500 metres at the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima, Peru, on August 9, 2019, with a time of 4:04.96.[1][6]
The runner has also secured national titles, including the 1,500 metres at the 2024 U.S. Olympic Trials on June 23, 2024, in Eugene, Oregon.[3][7]
Hiltz's participation occurs amid ongoing discussions on eligibility criteria for transgender and non-binary athletes in women's categories.[2][8]
Laurel Hubbard of New Zealand was the only openly transgender woman to compete at recent Olympics, entering the women's +87kg weightlifting at Tokyo 2020, where she failed to qualify for the final.[9][10]
No openly transgender women participated in events at the Paris 2024 Olympics.[8][11]
The International Olympic Committee's 2021 Framework on Fairness, Inclusion and Non-Discrimination defers eligibility rules to individual international federations, avoiding blanket testosterone limits.[12]
