NFL and referees' association continue contract talks as league prepares for potential replacement officials

The National Football League (NFL) and the NFL Referees Association (NFLRA) remain in negotiations for a new collective bargaining agreement, currently set to expire on May 31, 2026.[1][2]

Pro Football Talk first reported that the league is considering replacement referees if negotiations extend into training camps and become contentious, echoing a scenario from 2012.[1]

ESPN reviewed internal NFL emails stating the league has begun laying the groundwork to hire replacements for the 2026 season if no deal is reached.[2]

In 2012, the NFL used replacement officials for the first three weeks of the season during a lockout. The officials were primarily from Division III colleges, high school, and developmental leagues. The period ended with the return of regular officials after a new agreement.[3][4]

The replacements officiated a controversial final play known as the "Fail Mary" on September 24, 2012, in a Monday Night Football game between the Seattle Seahawks and Green Bay Packers at CenturyLink Field in Seattle. A desperation pass was ruled a touchdown on a simultaneous catch call, giving Seattle a 14-12 win.[3][4]

ESPN analyst Pat McAfee, a former punter for the Indianapolis Colts from 2009 to 2016, criticized the prospect of replacements on X, calling the 2012 period "terrible days" and stressing the need for official accountability and adaptation to technology.[5]
