Mets' Benge dives for catch to seal 5-1 win vs Angels

New York Mets rookie right fielder Carson Benge made a diving catch on a line drive to preserve a 5-1 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on May 3, 2026, at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California. The grab came in the bottom of the ninth inning with one out and a runner on first base after Angels second baseman Vaughn Grissom lined a drive down the first-base side. The play likely prevented a run and halted any late Angels rally.

The Mets have struggled for highlight-reel plays this season amid a slump, but Benge's effort stood out. Mets broadcaster Gary Cohen called the catch "pulchritudinous," a term meaning breathtaking or beautiful.

Benge went 1-for-2 with two runs scored, an RBI and two walks. Starter Clay Holmes allowed one run on four hits, struck out six and lowered his ERA to 1.69. The win marked the Mets' 12th of the season.

New York took two of three games in the series, its first series victory since defeating the Minnesota Twins twice on April 23. Benge said after the game: "I dove still not knowing. But I know I was going to try to make a play for my guys."
